Thought I'd share some images of the latest addition to my collection... I picked up the War of 1812 $10 commemorative gold coin to go along with the commemorative silver dollars purchased earlier in the year. I liked the images of it on the RCM website and am happy to report that the coin looks very nice in hand. The heraldic design gives the coin an "old time" feel and its allegorical representations of Canada, Britain and the US are a nice departure from the modern trend of realism on coins. Though still priced at a good premium over its 1/4 ounce gold weight (~40%), it appears to be a better gold "value" than the $100 gold Cariboo Gold Rush commemorative which has 10% less gold and is priced $30 higher. (I don't look at these commemorative coins as bullion investments, but I do like to "run the numbers" to get a sense of the premiums placed on the coins.) This is my first purchase of a modern gold NCLT coin from the RCM. I was pleased to see the large capsule (shown in the images) that the coin came in as it is a small coin (20 mm) and its handling/viewing is made much easier by the larger capsule. Is this the norm for small RCM gold coins? Anyone else take the plunge? Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

It's not bullion, it's proof. That plus the low mintage, this coin should sell out.

I like the coin, but my wife will kill me if I get it. I have been thinking about selling my Ladybug coin to get this, but my wife will kill me if I sell it.

Oh forgot to mention commems, that the larger capsule is the norm for the smaller gold coins from the mint.

@ztt2: Thanks for the info re: the capsule size -- good to know. @Lithaniel: Sounds like you've got yourself quite a dilemma!

Wow, that would look nice with my 1812 gold plated set. Sadly being young enough you can't get a decent paying job, I can't afford this.
