How many of you have this variety/error in your collection? ,the extra metal around the rim is raised like an extra thick die crack & doubling in all the legends.  |

I have a hunch it could be what's called a wire edge. I can't remember ever seeing one though, so I might have the wrong term.  Hopefully someone else will be able to either confirm or correct my hunch.  life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

I have seen this before on 20c coins but only on the 2008 minatge
I described it in my notes as a metal flaw - the coin shows that RH side of obverse with this flaw but I have seen coins that exhibit this error to about 80% of rim.
Though I would not say it is rare I have seen enough of them to say the are common but hard to find
I'll post some pics of further examples if I can dig them up

I have seen lots of these on the 2008 20 cents only.
I have seen it on the other side too, around the ZAB in eliZABeth
...it was pretty much the point at which I started putting them away, but now I noodle a lot more frequently.

I might be thinking of something a little different but just about every 2008 5c I've looked at seems to have a double rim similar looking to the 20c pictured.

The 2008 5c is commonly found with a 'double rim', but I think I only have a handful of them, but heaps that don't have it.
2008 5 Cent Data
All Double Rims I have are on the Rev.

Thanks for the replies everyone,as there are only a couple of members that have seen or heard of this they can't be too common,i have 20 UNC ones & I think i'll sit on them for a few years ( 10 or so LOL ) & see what goes on in years to come.
I like the way the extra metal goes in & out,follows the shapes of the tops of the letters,some of the other coins are more obvious than this one,others are more obvious in the doubling of the legends as well.
I have'nt checked them for the reverse variation though so will have to do that.

The only thing I can think of is chipped dies,long slithers broken out of the edges of the dies would also explain the rough looking surface as well.
