I am sorry but this sounds like a Craigslist ad selling whatever for $1000 because I, my husband/wife, kid, dog is terminally ill. Just not sure what he is trying achieve.

A KNOWN expert in the field, advertised, priced, and sold an item. The buyer made the purchase.

Regardless of what the widget is, the deal is done.

As long as we are going to mention grammar...

lose - to misplace - ie. something becomes lost if you lose it.

loose - detached or able to be detached

You can let a horse loose into a field, but can only lose him if you are not paying attention to where he goes and he gets lost.

Sorry - this is one of my pet peeves in modern posts - bad habit from being a teacher all my life.

There IS a possibility that this ebay sale may be temporarily suspended, the subject of the sale being the main exhibit in a court case.

If that does happen, it does not matter if they current owner is the legal owner or not, it that matter is to be tested in court.

One of the first things I thought of too.

Ever notice the name of this Forum? It's about coins. Not a grammmmmar study hall.
I like the Walmart type situation comparison. All so true that when a buisness makes a mistake, they expect you to backup. You make the mistake, to bad. In this case I'd just say sorry, better luck next time.

Seems like a very stupid, very elementary mistake on the S&B's part, if true.

It is a forum, though. Written communication is smoothed by good grammar and comprehension of posts is made easier by the same. Now, there is a difference between making the occasional error and making a completely unreadable post, but different people have different lines for those.

I am used to it. I am dyslexic (which is not an excuse for bad grammer but makes grammer and spell much more difficult) and have to read each post half a dozen times to make sure it makes sense to other people.

I read about 10 pages of posts on another forum about this transaction last night. What's really interesting to me is the difference between those posts and the ones here. There, 1) hardly anyone questioned the authenticity of the story, and 2) it seemed like about 90% sided with S&B, demanding that the only ethical thing to do was return it with more than a few saying taking the $1000 offer was inappropriate and something they wouldn't do.

I prefer this site's membership!

BTW, I still don't believe the story in it's entirety, if at all. CEOs and Presidents of Sales don't make demands and hang up on people in true situations of this type, let alone use the phrase "make it right," which doesn't even apply. They'd be acutely aware of their cost basis which would drive "settlement negotiations" and probably have legal counsel on the call, even if the law were 100% against them. Meanwhile, Mr. Lucky can't even get the grade right in the listing, keeps other coins in the "vault's" but didn't know what the 1900-O was worth and places the coin in a high profile auction where he solicits legal advice? I agree with CoinsKelly, that story belongs on craigslist.

I too read about this on another forum and I too was really, really surprised with the difference in opinions displayed here compared to over there. In all actuality, I was expecting more people here to side with S&B. I really don't know how to feel about the situation. Regardless if the guy knew ahead of time that it was a high dollar coin, he knows now. I don't know if I was in his shoes if I could in good conscious keep the coin. On the other hand he was invoiced for the coin, he paid for it, and they shipped it out. From reading the story, S&B had plenty of time to catch their mistake. I still don't think I could be cool knowing I was getting over on someone for $13000.

IF we assume the story is true, the "facts" that the coin was listed for 3-4 days on the S&B site, the guy called to inquire about the price and the assertion was that the $1650 price was firm, just might sway me towards the buyer. For all we know, maybe S&B got the coin for $100 from some widow's estate and it's karma. :) As for what would I do? Well, I walked back into the bank when I counted and found out they gave me $10 extra, was told "they don't make mistakes," so I took it and donated it to a food bank. Chances are I wouldn't have kept it. I probably would have messed with the CEO though and settled for some near $2000 coin in their inventory, which likely wouldn't have been much of a step up from their $1000 offer for them.

If anybody knows for sure how the legalities would play out, I'd love to hear.

Most likely, my final action would depend on how S&B handled the situation.
