Thought folks might like to have a quick look at the US SSB/War of 1812 gold half eagle vs. Canada's War of 1812 gold commemorative coin considering the obvious cross-border tie-in. Specifications: - Fineness: US - 0.900 // Canada - 0.999 - Weight: US - 8.359g // Canada - 7.8g - Diameter: US - 21.59mm // Canada - 20mm - Denomination: US - $5.00 // Canada - $10.00 - Mintage Limit: US - 100,000 // Canada - 2,000 - Finish: US - Proof or MS // Canada - Proof only I like the Canadian piece's "classic" use of allegory to represent the War's combatants: Great Britian, Canada and the US. US SSB Gold Half Eagle ($5.00) - Obverse/Reverse Canada War of 1812 Gold $10 - Obverse/Reverse Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

Reasons I like the Canadian one more.
1) Like the eye appeal more 2) More gold 3) Higher face value 4) I am Canadian
I wouldn't turn my nose up at either one of them.

Don't forget the Canadian version shown is in proof, while the American is uncirculated, so that alone can make a difference in eye appeal.
I like the US design much better, especially with the ships on it.

I like them both for different reasons, but if I had to choose, the Canadian reverse says a lot without having to say a lot.
