Hi enworb

I think ozcoin's wavy is authentic, but I am keen to corroborate the fine features of this unique coin

old pic of my sad one.
Yes mine has a cute tail or overhang bit at the top (which genuine ones should have) tho I have heard there were 2 types, I wouldn't touch one without the hang as it's then just a gouge to me.

Squire,
You have not mentioned "thinning of the downstroke where it joins the base of the 2"
I will try for a high detail photo, but as I dont have a USB microscope I have no idea how it will turn out.

Hi ozcoins

Yes, the "thinning of the downstroke where it joins the base of the 2" is another important feature.

I have been able to get reasonable success at photographing small features on my coins using the humble Samsung PL120 digital camera.

I try the following method:

- set the Scene Menu on "Text" - close up.
- set the Image Size to the highest possible.
- good natural lighting
- take a few photo's, holding the camera REAL still and just within focus - about 4 inches from the coin
- download the best images and import these into Microsoft Word.
- trim these to the area of interest, then stretch to fit the page .
- finally do a screenshot and import into image processing software. This permits you to save the image to a size less than 100 kb - so the Coin Collector Forum "gatekeeper" will let you post the image .

Hope that helps you.

I spotted mine without any magnification, I also showed my wife the next day and she saw it with just my description of "the wavy bit in the bottom of the 2".
Sorry all.
No photos tonight. Maybe I will get to play with the camera tomorrow night.

Squire,
RE photos.
Why are you doing anything at all in Word? It really should have no place in image manipulation.
Try putting the image straight into image editing software - even mspaint will work.

The process I use is.
Open in mspaint.
The picture is way too large, so "image","stretch/skew" on the menu to shrink it.
Then use the box tool to select the part you are interested in, cut, and paste to a new image.
Then save.

Hi all, this is my Wavy 20 I had in my bucket of change last year that got me started with noodling. Not a wonderful specimen, but hopefully shows enough detail to see what to look for?

... it is an authentic one, isn't it?

Thank you "Australian Coin" and "awildheart" for your detailed images of the wavy .
Both look very similar to mine in detail .

Of course both coins look authentic. I was never questioning this in the first place. I am more interested in a closer look at the details of this coin. Your help in this is appreciated .

I am interested to hear that there may be two types of wavy coin. I wonder what distinguishes them .

Thanks for your recommendations re. photo manipulation, ozcoins.

it does not sound right to me that there would be 2 types of wavy.
That would mean 2 dies got almost exactly the same damage which seems unlikely.
My guess is that any "other type" is how the fakes turn out.

Thanks Squire for bringing it the attention of those of us not lucky enough to find one of these beauties on what to look for when we finally do find one.
Hoping my first won't be a dodgy brothers one.

Good luck in finding a "wavy" "The Coin Hunter".

Maybe that will happen during one of your "lucky streaks". Like the time you bagged those two 2010 "twist-top" 50 cent pieces in short succession
