i have just joined here and read some links about radar notes. Never heard of these as a collectable before. So, like all fanatics, immediately checked my wallet and found a $50 radar. Number 97122179. I am looking for a radar enthusiast for advice. I have no desire to start collecting radars. ...... Coins are enough for me

Goatieman is the notes enthusiast around here. He has fostered an interest in notes in other members too!
Well done with your find!
8 digit radars are much harder to find than the 6 digit ones.

To hit an 8-digit radar is very, very, very hard. I can tell you this:
Their printed commonality is 1 in 11,111 notes.
I consider them to be rare!
If I was you I'd hold onto it (if you can you just leave a $50 in your collection with no worries then do it)

I recently brought some notes from the IAG auctions, they were $5. The notes were:

8-digit radar: UNC 1998 $5 CG98888889 cost $67.50 (13.5 times face value)

Normal radar: UNC 2001 (Federation) $5 IF01 788887 cost $17.50 (3.5 times FV)

On ebay recently here are some results:
5 x $5 8-digit radar UNC notes: ($375 so $75 each)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Macfarlan...em43af8ae3be
1 x $5 8-digit radar UNC note: ($80)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Macfarlan...em46037ad35a
2 x $5 8-digit radar UNC notes with nicer serials (03333330; described as central solid, similar to what I brought): ($150 each):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-8-Digit-R...em43acccf89d

I guess from denomination to denomination will determine the price, but on top of that too, serial numbers can have a huge impact in determining the price:

In the past I brought an UNC 1998 $50 BK98888889 for $260ish (5.25 times FV), at the same time I brought an UNC 1997 $50 ?97777779 for $225ish (4.5 times FV). The reason the 98888889 was more was because I purchased it in a pair with it's consecutive so 98888888 & 98888889 together for $600 odd from memory. Whereas I also brought 97777777 & 97777779 which overall was about $100 cheaper. This purchase brought on my passion for $50's, polymers & pretty serial numbers.

As for your Fine circulated condition, I'd expect that it might sell it for around: $75-$100 tops. As rare as it is, it'll still only attract a certain market especially in Fine/circulated condition.

Whereas, some other serials would attract a much higher premium. I have three nice notes I have found in circulation which would fetch a nice high premium (even in circulated condition):

  • $10 AA06 000004

  • $20 --06 000060

  • $50 CG06 123456

It's still a ripper note, so don't let go of it in a hurry.

Not something I would buy now, because I'm fine tuning my collection as much as I can, but in the past it'd be of huge interest to me.

(if I put ? or -- as prefixes, it's simply because I've forgotten the prefix)
