Hello,

I was wondering what you guys think of this 1972 d Kennedy half dollar. It seems to be a 40% silver coin. I got this in a bag of half dollars from the bank. It has a silver edge and sounds just like the 65-70 kennedy halfs. I will bring it to the coin shop Monday. It also weighs 11.6 grams instead of the 11.3 that it should weigh. I was planning on getting it checked out by a grading service.
Any info on this coin would be appreciated.

The edge on the 40% halves especially in this grade usually looks copper. You might have a coin that has been plated.

Only conclusive test to separate the coppernickel clad from the silver clad is a specific gravity test. the weights are close enough and the mint tolerances are wide enough that weight is not a conclusive test. A copper nickel clad can weigh as much as 11.79 grams and a 40% silver can weigh as little as 11.1 grams. So any weight between 11.1 and 11.79 could be either one.

SG for for copper nickel clad is 8.92, for the 40% it is 9.53 and it isn't too difficult to do an SG test to an accuracy of +/- .1 (Just make sure you don't trap bubbles on the coin when you do your weight in water.) Getting that second decimal place though is a real bear.

I agree that a SG test is an excellent method to differentiate between the two types of halves in question.

However, I have found it difficult to set up and perform a reliable test with repeatable results using various 'inexpensive' components.

Does an easy-to-follow CCF-recommended tutorial exist for setting up and performing a SG test specifically for coins?

Please let me know.

The 1965-1970 halves does have a silver rim.
The 1971 forward do have the copper showing except for the silver ones 1992 forward that has the S mint mark on them from Silver proof sets.
There is a test that I use for silver VS clad halves, but the examples must be un toned to tell for sure. There were also a series of silver clad ones in 1976.
But here is the test I was talking about. Use one ply tissue. It may require pulling the two layers apart.

I have heard of 1971D and 1977D silvers, not 72? What did you find out?

Still No update? It had to be plated as there was no known 72 Silver error, at least yet anyway.
