Many of the early US commemorative coins were associated with World's Fairs or Expositions. In fact, the first 10 silver and gold design types all had a direct link to a Fair or Exposition (either here or in France) -- the 1916-17 McKinley Memorial gold dollars were the first US commemoratives not to be somehow linked to such an event.

At many of the Fairs or Expositions, the US Mint was on site with an exhibit that included a coin press on which souvenir medals were struck. These medals were every bit the match for US commemorative coins in terms of design aesthetics and overall quality (IMHO). They were typically struck in silver, copper, bronze and gilt (gold-plated bronze).

Here are a few examples of the US Mint's souvenir medals from the Fairs/Expositions that also featured a commemorative coin. (I have others, but this will serve as a good intro and "teaser" for future posts!)

Enjoy!

basebal21/dsfreeworld: I agree, I think the Lewis and Clark medal is especially nice. Here's the gilt version:

Another excellent post commems.

I would value and appreciate a single post that focuses on each of these tremendous medals from you set ... complete with the insights and history of the issues for which we have come to respect and enjoy from your wonderful collection.

Pleased to share that I have in my collection an example of the 1915 Pan-Pacific medal. Mine is a chocolate brown example that has some wear ... perhaps AU55.

I've never imaged the medal ... so no photo ... perhaps I will do so ... but it's the same as your lovely MS64 example with some circulation rub.

I am intrigued by the incuse impression on the obverse rim at 5am ... AITKEN FECIT ... a medal designed by classic commemorative legend Robert Aitken.

Perhaps you can tell us more about this one in a separate post?

Enjoying and learning from everything you share with us.

David

Another great example of the medal. I'm preferable to the silver one myself but might have to be on the hunt for both now.

Its a shame they didnt reuse the reverse design of the medal for the modern L&C
