As luck would have it, I stumbled across quite an opportunity yesterday and struck while the iron was hot. I hopefully within the week will be the proud owner of an AU/BU 1880 Shield nickel (one of 16,000). The 1881 arrived last week and it's quite a beauty. That only leaves the '79 to go (Proof years excepted). What beautiful coins the Shield nickels are in high grade. Yes, I will post pics when in hand. Paleoguy

Very impressive, that's a tough set to put together.

It sounds like you got a good deal on the key date of the series. There can't be very many survivors out of the 16,000 in high grade around and to find one would be quite an accomplishment. Congratulations! The '79 should be a piece of cake now. LOL! Ed ANA LM-3175

That is absolutely awesome. I've thought about doing the same set. We'd love to see some really good pix of those key dates!

Thanks all. When the smoke clears, I'll need to upgrade the '71 and the '75. The rest are VF+ through UNC and presentable.. I did a year set (less '77 and '78). PG

I'm very jealous, this will be a very cool set when you are done. Hard to find these in good shape without breaking the bank.

It's not very often you hear someone let down that they received a classic coin proof instead of a business strike.

True dat Dave.... But these early nickels have more of the key date proofs floating around than the high quality MS's... and much cheaper also... Go figure.... If I had the (fill in blank with several options) I'd go after a proof set of V nics.... I have an 1895 Cameo Proof in my Type Set and it is a totally wonderful coin.
