I have yet to get and actual box of coins. Do you guys have the tellers order boxes for you? I went through $10 in BWR of pennies the other day and got about 2% copper and no finds... 95% 2012

Aye, I always have a box of Halves on rotation at my Credit Union, and at least one box of nickels on rotation at my Bank (provided I show all the tellers what I've found afterwards :-) ).
Ordering boxes depends on the institution. Some banks require a business account to order, others don't care and are just happy to order for you.

Good idea to ask about it here first. I wish I did. I've found that some banks will order boxes for free, and others will charge for boxes. It doesn't hurt to "shop around".

Most banks just give you what you need. If not you may have to order

Do boxes usually have anything old in them?

I haven't actually searched boxes, but I'm pretty sure that like with loose rolls, boxes can have pretty much any combination of old and new coins, so don't be surprised if you get a box with all 2012's.

I pick up boxes of coins for work a couple times a week. A while ago I also got a box of each for my self so now every time a pick up a box for work I switch it with my box that I have already search. This way I always have a fresh box of something to search every couple of days. The coins in the boxes varies. Sometimes I will get a box with 60% of the coins newer ones that some one must of search and then dumped back at a bank. Then there are other times when I will find 50 to 100 wheaties in a box. You never can tell until you open it. I think that's part of the fun.

I order boxes of cents from my bank a week in advance 4-8 boxes at a time with no problem and no extra charge. Quote: Do boxes usually have anything old in them? I have found many wheaties and maybe three IH's over the past 40 years and around 1.3 million cents searched. I have found many varieties and a few errors as well. John1

If you are going through pennies, you can have them order a box for you, or a lot of banks will have a couple boxes on hand and will give you one (I never ask for more than one box unless they have ordered them for me.) You can have banks order boxes for you to make sure they will have them on hand. Be nice to your tellers, they will be nice to you. Once they get to know you more they will be very helpful to you, I have a bank that orders me 3 boxes of pennies every week. They have no problem ordering them for me, and they know I pick them up the day Brinks drops them off so they don't even take up vault space.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a larger amount of coins to go through. I don't get to actually go through much unfortunately :/

On average I get at least 1 "keepers" per box. For Nickels that's either a War Nickel, a Buffalo nickel. For Halves, that's something silver or a doubled die. I also tend to get at least 3 or 4 "moderate keepers" per box. For Nickels, those are low mintage dates in good condition. For Halves they're high-grade NIFCs or an occasional proof. Any of these tend to be hole fillers or upgrades to an album. Over the course of every few boxes I get something "big". For Nickels that's something like a buffalo in great shape, or a V nickel. For Halves, that's a Franklin or a walker or the likes.

I use 2 local banks; both will order boxes for free when asked. One wants the coins back unwrapped in transit bag quantities (cents=$50; nickels=$200; dimes= $1K; quarters=$1K; halves=$1K) so they can ship them straight out - no inventorying or daily counting... The other enjoys being a pain & wants the coins back rolled; oh, well... I'm new to this, but my limited experience is: boxes of pennies are productive enough to keep me from getting too depressed - 35% to 40% are coppers and I get an avg of 20 wheaties per box. Nickels are awful: avg= 1 lousy silver War Nickel per box. Halves are awful, too: I did 6 boxes (6,000 coins!) and got zilch. A local old-timer told me to not even bother with dimes or quarters because silvers are so few and far between; haven't yet tried either and not sure if I will. Anybody else got any opinions or experience on what's more productive - pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters or halves?

It took me a while before I could find a bank in my area that would provide coins for face value.
I recently found one that would order for me no problem. That seems to be the key. I used to go into banks and ask for rolls on the spot, sometimes it worked, sometimes not. I never asked for too many (most was probably $100 in nickels) without an order.

I live in a relatively small town, and work in a nearby small town. Each has a branch of my supply bank. I call them the day before and they get the coins ready for me, my usual order is $25 pennies, $100 nickels, and $250 dimes. They don't have to order them, I don't think, just like the call in advance to get them ready for me (the asked that I call, so I don't have to wait as long at the branch). I do this once a week, sometimes missing a week, and alternate branches, so the most each branch sees me is once every other week, or about 2 times a month. When I travel to the large city, there is a branch there I use and they just have it all there anytime I show up (which is not often).
Pennies are fun because I feel like I am getting something as I keep all the copper. I also really like nickels, perhaps my favorite, because I can find silver and buffalo, and I keep all the 1950's and earlier, so there is a bunch to keep there as well. Dimes are boringgggg, but I do like silver dimes, so I keep searching them. Never tried quarter or halves.
