So since vinegar is taking way too long, I've decided to put this thread on hold until I can get my hands on a bottle of nic-a-date.  |

Of course the worse shape they're in, besides the date, the more likely they are to be from the '30s. And I'm curious: Have there been any "dateless" 1937-D "three-legged" Buffalo nickels like there are "dateless" 1916 Standing Liberty quarters? And do the usual services certify them? |

huh...good question...dateless three legged...
Say, please educate the un educacted...why is it most likely that dateless are from the 30's?

Most dateless nickels are NOT from the '30s. The vast majority are from the teens. '20s make up the next biggest group. It just stands to reason because the teens were in circulation longer. The only dateless '30s I have ever encountered were 1931-S (I have found exactly 2 of them), 1934-D (quite a few) and 1935-D. And that's based on on going through roughly 25,000 Buffalo nickels. I have NEVER heard of or seen a dateless 3-legger. If someone did discover one however, it COULD be authenticated, just like dateless overdates (18/7-D) can be authenticated. |

$4 per bottle seems pretty cheap. I might be ordering one.
Also, how could dateless overdate buffaloes be authenticated? I didn't know this could be done.

I almost have a complete set of Buffalo nickels from doing this for some of the tough dates. I am missing 6 coins I believe. But I did get the 13S Type 2 and the 21S out of the way  |

CrazyCat: Most times, the dateless 18/7-D overdate gets authenticated because someone has restored the date with vinegar, Nic-a-date or whatever, and if the TPG can read the date clearly, they will authenticate it. It may also be possible for them to authenticate an UNrestored specimen if they can see some specific landmarks that were unique to the 18/7-D. |

I read about restoring dates with pbc from Radio Shack earlier tonight in a different thread. Search for this topic: Collecting Coins on the Cheap: The Buffalo nickel Challenge And then do a search for RadioShack. Also the thread is a fun read! |
