I may have the chance to get a 1883 S Morgan dollar for free. I have no pics but it is very dark toned, but detail wise I would say its in XF condition. Is there any added value to this year of Morgan? I don't know much about key date or rare Morgans.

Well, "free" is a pretty good price. These get to be a Conditional Rarity higher grades, beginning with honest AU coins. First, snag this coin. I'd buy every one offered to me, at that price, regardless of grade. Then, post a couple pics and we'll talk about true grade.

The 83-S is second common Morgan for that year, coming in at 6,250,000. Unless this is a known VAM for that year and Mint, it's value is around $40 in XF. Currently, there are 11 known VAMS for the 83-S Morgan, and you can learn more about VAMS here: http://www.vamworld.com/

The best most (average) collectors do for that year/mint mark is EF to low UNC as it becomes a conditional rarity in mid UNC and above.
If you have a shot at an XF for $0 you should definitely grab it. A problem free example in that grade should command a slight premium over common dates.

The color looks allot like my pocket piece (except mine is in AU condition), its a 1883-S also. For free you can't go wrong so I don't even know why anyone would ask about the coin before accepting it. The 1883-S is not a common date coin and does carry a slight premium but heck as I said for free I would not even have to ask about the coin I would have just accepted it and said thank you even if it was a common date

Its my mother in laws .. She found a box full of change cleaning a room and told me to go throught knowing there could be silver. Now I need to wait til tmrw to see if she is letting me have it or if she wants me to buy it from her. Knowing her she will give it to me but well see. Not questioning the coin at all, was just curious.
Theres also a 51 Franklin 2 Washingtons and 3 Rosies up in the air eith it. Lol

Quote: Theres also a 51 Franklin 2 Washingtons and 3 Rosies up in the air eith it. Lol The 51 Franklin, is it uncirculated? FYI, the 51 Franklins at gem uncirculated, which is an MS65, is around $72.50-$80, add the FBL designation and that goes up to around $235-$250.

No not Uncirculated. All these coins were found in a small pouch while my mother in law was cleaning out a room in their other house. (Shes a hoarder let me remind you) lol. So theres probably more where that came from!
The Franklin IMO is also in XF condition maybe a little better, and has rounded toning on edges I believe. Very cool.
Again, if I get these sometime this week, I will definitely post pics.
