So I decided to expand on my Buffalo nickel collection, and since I have very little money, I decided to get some dateless buffaloes from my dealer. Got 17 of them for $0.13 a piece. One of them was a type one, and another was a 1929 (no mintmark) partial date. I currently have all the other 15 in vinegar to see what date comes up. Stay tuned for pics Edit: Decided to put the type 1 in vinegar to see if a mint mark would show up Edited by CrazyCat 09/19/2012 7:14 pm

Can't wait to see how they turn out! What sort of vinegar are you using?

I hope everyone is using just standard 5% acetic acid solution. I don't think buffalo would go well with a balsamic vinaigrette!

I'm using ordinary white vinegar (5% acetic acid) because like philadelphian said, a balsamic vinaigrette would go much better on salads than on coins.

Would soaking a silver coin in vinegar work? I have a dateless Standing Liberty that I would love to know the date of.

Only works on nickels.
Pretty good pick up. I regularly buy dateless buffs from my guy for 10 cents each. Sometimes I get lucky and he sells me a full date nickel (V, buff, or jeff) for 35 cents!

Okay, so here's the first pics. Only one new date showed up. It looks like a 1920-P! Here's the coins side by side. 1920 on left, 1929 on right: Now the reverse: And a closeup of the date on the 1920 because it's really hard to see in the first pic:

Why not just use nic-a-date and get the results within a few seconds?

Availability? (hard to use if you don't have it around)

I know that nic-a-date would be much easier, but I don't have any of it, so I had to settle for vinegar.
