I just got this one recently, but I am not sure as to the RIC#. Although the reverse is not quite as nice as the obverse, it appears to lack a mint mark in ex, so I presume that it may be from Rome. Am I right about this? Any help relating to the mint and RIC # would be appreciated!   |

I believe your coin is RIC I, Rome 258, with the reverse of PAX AVG.

echizento- Thanks for the help! But I actually am not seeing RIC# 258 on wildwinds. Is it the case that this coin is in the book despite not being on the website?

I would have said RIC 499 Mediolanum in RIC and Siscia in Wildwinds. RIC is old and out of date bordering worthless. Wildwinds has input from many dealers who know not and is slowly being improved. I don't know what is right.

Doug, I defer to your expertise. How can you tell the difference? Is it because of the style of the bust? I'm confused  . |

I think that what Doug meant is that RIC 499 is attributed to Mediolanum in RIC and to Siscia at WildWinds. I've made corrections to a few pages in the past for Dane at WW and I can say that AAH is (was) very often wrong (or simply laxist) in his attribution. So Mediolanum should be closer to reality...

bobbyhelmet, not the main source but he had a lot and still has quite many listed there. Some were plainly deleted (bad quality coins that made the attribution at least difficult), some others are replaced over time with better quality material. Anyone can submit coins to be listed on WW, if they are nicer than those wich are already there or simply not represented at all. I got a few of my own (past and present) there.

Thanks Dionysos. Don't use WW much now, did a lot when I started collecting but like many found a lot of conflicting / incorrect data, confused more than helped sometimes. Does it have a 'send note to moderator' kind of function on its coin entries yet? Always wanted to contribute coins and corrections but was never comfortable Emailing Dane directly, she must be very busy just adding to it. Didn't want to seem ungrateful by pointing out faults via Email but would have happily sent in formatted data for approval if it had a submissions page / form. RIC 258 page 153 Vol. V part 1 reads "PAX AVG Pax as above but seated l." Our figure is not seated. 'As above' starts with 252 and runs through 257 with various legends but 256 is closest showing a standing Pax in several variations all of which have a letter (delta, V, T) in the field but our field is empty. 499 has nothing in the field. The portrait style does look like other types of 'Mediolanum' but I have no idea how they came to that town name or how Wildwinds came to Siscia. I do know that there have been more recent studies that I have not seen in languages I do not read. I learned Latin and Greek in college but I would have done better for my numismatic education learning German (and possibly French, Bulgarian and who knows what else). RIC V is the worst of the ten volumes. You can attribute coins to RIC numbers but that does not really mean anything except that the coin was thought in the past to have been part of that mint. Some are right (perhaps most are right) but I would not bet the farm on anything based on an RIC number.
