Hi all. I purchased a new coin for the first time in many moons.  It is far from problem free, but it is one that I needed for my gold type collection, and it did not break the bank.  Anyways, I am wondering if any one can attribute it(I have no idea)? I know the reverse has a "small" 5 Also grade opinions appreciated..   |

Very expensive series to get into!
Only one known variety from what I can see: Small 5, BD-2, R-3 notes as: "Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/a. The half eagles of 1811 fall neatly into two obverse categories -- Tall 5, Small 5 -- and the reverses are monogamously paired to each obverse, showing minor differences of the fletchings in relation to the denomination. The Small 5 reverse shows the point of the fletchings positioned midway across the flag of the 5. The Small 5 half eagle is among the more frequently seen issues from the decade of the 1810s, making it a popular choice for type purposes."

Very very cool! Extremely nice purchase!  Such coins I can't only dream of owning at this moment. Looks like VF-30 details. Ex jewelry maybe? |

Thanks for the info BH! Good call on the grade DoubleEagle. It's in a VF details "Mount Removed" PCGS holder, and I would think it is around a 30. It definitely has that shiny knicked up jewelry surface, but it also has a fair amount of luster in the protected areas, enough for a very small cartwheel. You cant really see that in the picture. It was $1945 shipped, ending up around $1900 after ebay bucks....as opposed to the $4500 or so that a problem free example would cost. |

The gold coin is nice but the marks on it kind of ruin my enjoyment:(
But if you like the coin, then enjoy it! The design on it is still very nice!

Yeah, it is a filler for now. I have been having a hard time finding a problem free circ for any kind of reasonable price.

Congrats on picking this up. These are scarce and expensive in all grades. I'm thinking this one would be a VF-25 details coin. Looks like this may have been used as a broach judging from the location of the mounting marks on reverse.
