Went to Home Depot (self serve lane)last night for a conector for my new dishwasher. Total after tax $6.64, put a $20 into the machine got $13.40 back. It seems that Home Depot rounds down no matter what. Good on them.

Most business would be wise to round down on all transactions. It is easier and the money lost is still less that what the banks take for electronic payments.

Just saw this on Twitter: "Purchase was $4.91. Tried to give the cashier $4.90, says she still needs the penny. I give her $4.95 and get a nickel back. Okaaaay.." Hilarious.  Edited by CC-Ottawa

I have noticed most places give you the exact total of your purchase, which they must because they (mostly) don't know how you're going to pay. With cash, most round up or down, depending on store policy. With plastic though they'll charge you the exact amount, to the last invisible penny.

Went to the post office yesterday to send a package. I use my own stamps, but I was off by one cent. So I asked the clerk if I could purchase a one cent stamp. Well the clerk said: "we can't sell just one 1 cent stamp because we can't accept pennies and we would have to round either up or down; so we only sell them in stacks of 5." So I said, "ok, I'll take 5. Clerk said, "oh, I'm all out. Someone cleaned me out of my penny stamps!" (I cringed, thinking, now people are starting to hoard 1 cent stamps)!  So I said, "how about 2 cent stamps... I'll take two 2 cent stamps and place one on the package. I'll just be over by one cent.." Clerk said, "ok, the total will be 4 cents, but then we will have to round it up to 5 cents." So, getting tired of this pettiness, I just agreed to pay the 5 cents for 4 cents worth of stamps. After I paid and put the 2 cent stamp on the package, I realized that I should have asked for three 2 cent stamps and have the clerk round down to 5 cents. After all, I did put one penny too much on the package. So I was actually ripped a penny! Clerk whistled a happy tune as I left...  Anyway, all that fuss for a one cent stamp! So, I wonder if someday they'll do away with the 1 cent, 2 cent, and 3 cent stamp and just round off the stamps to the nearest 5 cent stamp!  |

allspice: you should go back and buy 3x 2cent stamps over and over again throughout the day. That'll force them to either pay you in 1cent stamp or to stock up on pennies again. I thought this transition to a non-penny world was supposed to be painless but it's worse.

Was at a Mac's store yesterday, when it is their favour they round to the nickle, otherwise they give you change with pennies. Kind of funny, but I guess with lots of small transactions 1-2% can be huge.

Amazing - all the "official" hubbub about the "worthless" penny and yet a thread like this exists that shows the common man placed value on them in monetary transactions. Both businesses and people are referred to here as wanting/missing them. I hope the US is smarter on this one than they have been in previous years considering other monetary changes.
Yes, eventually the system will be worked out to go more smoothly, but its just funny how humankind has to mess things up royally in order that the powers that be can call it "simplified" and "better."

I'm finding that I get through a checkout a little more quickly. Neither customer nor clerk has to spend time counting out pennies.
I think this is going to work well, once everyone gets the hang of it.

I still use pennies at those businesses that will take them. The other day I was at a grocery store and the clerk asked if the pennies I handed her were the last of them. I couldn't help but smile as I envisioned the $175 worth of pennies still sitting in banker boxes waiting to be sorted at home.
I have found that in a few stores I've been at, they've rounded up even though they should have rounded down.
