Interesting 50c Rims - Coin Community Forum

FNQ Pillar of the Community Australia 507 Posts	Posted 04/10/2013 02:15 am Finished off the rest of my 50 cent pieces today, and came across a couple of interesting rims. Exhibit A: 1998 Bass/Flinders It appears the die and the planchet may have had a disagreement over alignment. The coin has a "rounded" appearance. Note the rounded dodec edges Coin on left with normal for comparison Exhibit B: 1981 Coat of Arms I'm tempted to say "bitten edge", although not totally convinced. Rim prominence runs from the S to the L of Australia Another gratuitous coin photo :p Let's hear your opinions! Report this Post to the Staff

sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 04/10/2013 02:41 am I have seen a few 'bitten edge' 50c. coins. There is some variability, one 'bite' to another. This happens at the blanking stage. I have also seen a few 'rounded corners', but I suspact that there may be a few causes of this type of error. Report this Post to the Staff

enworb Pillar of the Community Australia 4411 Posts	Posted 04/10/2013 06:09 am The first one is interesting. Looks like a slight ramstrike to me. Slightly more and it would hve large teeth I reckon. The second one is a genuine clip. You can see soms fishtailing on the A by the clip. I have two clipped 50c, one that is a double clip. They looks very similar on the edges.
