This one threw me for a curve ball as a newbie. I would like to save this but it seems that rust has come thru. Any advice on this unknown coin would greatly be appreciated.

It should be bronze in the center and there is, unfortunately, nothing that can be done. If it has BD, it can be treated, but otherwise it has to remain as is.

I got my republican denarius fouree through the post today and was wondering what could be done to it - maybe some more experienced folk have some ideas.

A dab of vaseline will prevent the air from oxidizing the coin. You could use olive oil but being organic it will go rancid. If you want to spend money they do sell coin preservatives. From what I can tell it is essentially furniture polish in a tiny bottle with a BIG price tag !

Are you sure it's a fouree or a silvered antonininus that is loosing it's silvering? Can you make out any details? In any event I agree with FR on how to preserve it.

Not really sure. It's definitely plated with a silver or silver like metal. Using the loupe it's not painted on and very well be bronze underneath. Nothing can really be ascertained under the loupe in regards to markings. The obverse seems to have a figure facing right (mars,etc..) The damage is not from my cleaning as I only placed in distilled water with the whole lot that I purchased.

I still find it fascinating even if it can't be identified.
