I finally filled this slot with a PCGS coin and I would like to hear what you think about in relation to what PCGS graded her at. Thank you for your interest! Edited by oih82w8 06/17/2013 09:35 am

Quote: Supgog, could you elaborate on this to me Large cents were minted out of pure copper, Flying Eagle cents, as well as 1859-1863 (and some of the 1864) Indian cents were minted from copper-nickel alloy, and starting 1864 and afterwards, cents were minted from bronze (95% copper). TPGs would attribute high grade large cents and bronze cents as either BR,RB or RD, based on the coin's color. However, they do not attach any of these labels to copper-nickel cents. I'd assume that the reason is that none of these actually have the same reddish color (more of a yellow-brown), but I'm not sure what's the exact reason.

I was going by a site I use for photo grading and that was the grade that matched it. I didn't think they used color either so I took it as gospel. Guess its wrong.

oih82w8, I just filled this slot myself, with a PCGS AU50/CAC. Yours definitely has less wear than mine, and I love the sharp strike and nice surface appearance.
I'll go with the AU55 crowd, and congratulate you on a nice purchase!

I'll break from the crowd and go with AU58. It's got an excellent strike, which can be problematic for this date.
