Hey guys being a collector I always look for the strange things in case..Well when I took pics of this 1908 I realized I found something that might be very very rare...I checked on line and what ever books I could but cannot find this variety.. here is the link with all the pics.....Perhaps some one from the US can tell me how rare it really is http://www.ebay.com/itm/12118503207....m1558.l2649Edited by artdio

it does not appear to be a 9 over 8, it is just a little extra metal making it to look like a closed 9, imo. still a nice coin but I wouldn't believe it to be rare..

I would call it a closed 9 due to PMD or a die chip. |

I readily concur with the PMD assessment. There is an error in the listing though. It's the repeated misspelling of the word "nickel" ... NOT "nick-LE"  There are credibility issues here that far more trouble my sense of propriety. I feel that calling this item "EXTREMELY RARE" is very deceptive; unintentional and hopeful though, that description may be. There are far too many such coin listings on ebay that take advantage of ill-informed collectors and would-be collectors who want to spark their interest with some great find. This is yet another example.  If this "discovery" coin is truly a new variety, why not seek to get it certified as such, prior to marketing it? Edited by ExoGuy

Look at the vertical lines in the last image.
I think "cleaned" is a distinct possibility.

It's a die chip at a very weak point in most dies with a "9" in the date - you see this phenomenon across issues containing that number.

Hey there, Artdio .... Most thoughtful and considerate of you to amend the listing. I hope that my comments weren't taken harshly, as that wasn't my intent.
While I'm in the "not-a-die-chip" camp, I certainly can't rule out that possibility!

@ exo....its all good....Next time I will come to this side first ..well sooner than later.I have a Lincoln Cent that has a very very weak strike really neat coin. |
