What Book To Use To Find Pre 1900 Dated Coins?

Madmartigan Valued Member United States 264 Posts	Posted 06/15/2007 1:46 pm I'd like to get some feedback on what books are good to find info, price, etc. on pre-1900 coins. I have about 8 coins now dated in the 1800s. Two of them I know the country, etc. but not the others. I have a 2006 World Coin book that is only good for 1901 - present. Any suggestions? Also figure out if you would want the 2007 Edition or the 2004 Edition. kuhli Valued Member United States 230 Posts	Posted 06/15/2007 10:05 pm Up until 1996, the Krause Catalog of World Coins included everything from 1801-date. In 1997 they split up the centuries. If you don't have a lot of the newer coins, you might consider looking for a used Krause from the early to mid-90's. Report this Post to the Staff
swamperbob Pillar of the Community United States 5362 Posts	Posted 06/16/2007 09:44 am Unless you are planning to invest a lot of money in older world coins, I definitely agree that an older edition would be best. They can be located at used book stores for 1/10th to 1/4 original prices and although the prices have changed some - it is still a good guide for rarity. Krause now produces one book per century, so even if you are just searching dealer junk boxes you need 5 books. That gets expensive even though they do not update all of them EVERY year. There are still thousands of coins from the 1600s up that are $1 coins. Investing too much makes little sense. Report this Post to the Staff

I like to buy 1 to 10 lb lots of coins and go over them. Started working to list all the coins in an excel file. Up to 400+ coins and not made a dent. Report this Post to the Staff
