Speared O Penny? - Coin Community Forum

alkoz Valued Member United States 146 Posts	Posted 06/20/2007 11:55 am While roll hunting on Monday I came across this odd penny.It is not a scratch, it is like rays in the memorial and through the O in one cent and partially on the N.Is this a new rare error, or a one of a kind?The date is 1998P.Any help appreciated. matt. thingee Pillar of the Community United States 2177 Posts	Posted 06/20/2007 1:37 pm That's a cool looking cent. I think the 'the speared O' is gas captured underneath and not a die break. The line appears rounded and not sharp. That's only my opinion. The marks in the Lincoln Memorial appears to be a die clash. Again only my opinion. I hope other members give their opinions of this because they would most likely be able to give better detailed information. Report this Post to the Staff
tcekolin Valued Member United States 69 Posts	Posted 06/20/2007 1:58 pm I have seen a number of pennies with similar issues, though none of mine have been quite this cool, and I have been attributing them to gas. I have saved a couple of my more interesting finds, but I mostly return them back into circulation now. Report this Post to the Staff

coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 06/20/2007 11:22 pm I'm not completely sure what causes this particular type of die gouge, but they do happen and don't bring any premium value. I have seen them on Lincoln cents dated as early as 1938. Gary was correct in that it is some sort of machining or tooling problem that scraped out part of the surface of the die, but how and why I don't know. Report this Post to the Staff
