I wish these pictures came out as clear as I see them with my loop. But notice a strong date above the 192 to the NW. The 3 is worn too smooth to notice anything. I see no other doubling any where else on the coin.

I didn't see a 1923 DD in the Cherry Picker's guide so I have no idea about this coin.

Vaslin, I think this is Mechanical Doubling. Not a true DD.

It was definitely my lean, but what's confusing me is that I'm not seeing it anywhere else on the coin. But I can certainly accept that explanation.

I'll acetone the coin tonight and see if I can get a better picture of it.

I'll see about getting another 1923 out of my collection so I can compare the widths of the numbers and repost it tomorrow.

It's Machine Doubling...takes up part of the normal profile of the design, is flat and has no character, and does not have notches at the corners. Machine Doubling can and will be found in very small areas of one surface of a coin - just depends on exactly where it got stuck and how the pressure forced it out of the cavities of the die. Nothing more than that.

Thanks Thingee and Copper! Yea, after looking at it again last night, I can now see the difference. I needed to get a second coin with the same date to really see how there isn't any additional markings, but rather a change in the current one.

Back into the pile it goes!
