1957 D - What's Up With The 9? - Coin Community Forum

Vaslin Pillar of the Community United States 914 Posts	Posted 06/20/2007 1:29 pm Found this 9 on the date to be quite curious. The top part of the 9 is filled in with some extra on the top that doesn't come thru well in 2D. Plus, the extra section of metal coming out at 4 o'clock. I'm not convinced of die break. The tail off of the 9 is too smooth for an irregular break. The stuff inside the curvature of the 9 is bumpy however. Report this Post to the Staff

coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 06/20/2007 11:26 pm It isn't actually additional metal on the coin, it's metal that was already there but wasn't struck-in because of missing parts of the die. If your hammer has a hole in the middle, you'll leave a raised dot when you pound dirt with it...same thing here. Gary is correct in that die chips and breaks such as these are very common and do not bring premium value. Their only value is in use as markers in determining whether multiple coins were struck by the same die - die markers. They are used in attributing doubled dies, mintmark varieties, and the like. One for-instance...1960D-1MM-019, (RPM#019) is a nice D/D north repunched mintmark for Lincoln cents. It is very similar to 1960D-1MM-017, except that in all cases with die #19 there is a die gouge protruding upward from the back side of the 9 of the date... 1960D-1MM-017: 1960D-1MM-019: Report this Post to the Staff
