I'm like Spica in that I am collecting world silver proof coins. I only have a dozen or so, but I'm working on it . If I count my bullion coins (non-proof) I have maybe two dozen.

I've got 1405 darksides counting years and mints and only 671 just going for types.I don't count notes, tokens, medals. There is though another aspect for me, since I'm from Romania. First Romanian coin was minted in 1867. Until then, a part of Romania was an Ottoman province, another one was integrated in the Austrian Empire and the other one was under Russian occupation. So the official currency of Romania was actuelly Turkish, Russian or Austrian coinage. Moreover, some Austrian coins for example were minted in Romania. For example, the "A" mintmark means Karlsbad(Alba Iulia) a city which is today in Romania, but which belonged to the Austrian Empire until 1918. So ... darksides or not?

In a purely American community of collectors that "darkside" term may make sense. From a non-US perspective it's kind of odd anyway. So go ahead and count them all as darksiders. By the way, Alba Iulia is/was Karlsburg in German; according to this page http://aeiou.iicm.tugraz.at/aeiou.e...?LANGUAGE=en it had the E and GYF mintmarks ... Christian

stratocaster - The point you raise is certainly open to interpretation and perhaps this would be a good place to settle those issues, since I don't believe there is a formal definition of what constitutes a Darkside. Anytime a country "changes hands" is invaded or makes use of another countries coinage does it alter the definition? I would think so. chrisild While it would seem that the US would have a clearer understanding of darkside it may be more complicated. For discussion, here are a few thoughts: The USA was originally composed of British Colonies, Spanish Colonies (Florida), French territory (Louisiana and all of the LA purchase area), Mexican Territory (California and the Southwest) and Russian Territory (Alaska) - so are coins of all those countries counted as US (not darkside)? How about Hawaii which was an independent country? Up to 1857, the USA used coins from many countries as legal tender. So are British and French coppers darksiders? How about silver coins from France, England, Bolivia, Peru, and even Sierra Leone which can be proven to have circulated in the US are they counted as US coins? Simple use of a coin for monetary purposes is not an adequate definition. But my favorites are the Mexicans, they formed the majority of money in actual circulation between 1820 and 1857. As much as 90% of the coinage used in the USA was actually Mexican in origin. So are Mexican coins not darkside? Even the silver used in US coinage was actually salvaged from Mexican coins up until the time of the Civil War (1860s). So many of these coins were shipped new to the US and spent their entire circulating life in the US. Then you have the coins made in the US for other countries under contract. There are so many examples you would have a hard time listing them. I think it is complex and each of us can come up with a different definition. Just have fun with it and the knowledge you pick up along the way.

For me USA coins means coins we minted for ourselves in our own mints.

I have lived in the US, Spain and Germany and coming from the UK, with large modern collections from each of these plus portugal and austria and of course the euro and have had an interest with russia. Went travelling around yugoslavia and picked up the coins from those countries. I have no idea how many coins I have, with every coin I can get my hands on, though I am into the cheaper and moderner coins which makes life a lot easier. Each collection usually has a start date, german is 1871, spain a similar date, but the UK has no real start or end dates so it just goes into the folder anyway.

My "start date" for German coins is 1949 since that is when the country where I live, the Federal Republic of Germany, was founded or established. (I do have some older pieces, from the times of the German Empire and the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, but that is not what I focus on.) Of course the introduction of a new currency is always a good starting point - e.g. decimal pound in the UK, euro in the EU - but many coin collectors apparently find, after some time, that collecting modern pieces only is not that interesting ... Also, with regard to modern pieces, I tend to stay away from coins that cannot be had at face value. This "tend to" indicates that I am not terribly consistent in that regard, but collecting should first of all be fun. Christian

Being a relitive newby to foreign coins ,,I conservatively guessed at less than a 1000,, but also being the lazy sort at times, I have entered none of them except Mexico into my data base .

I'm with Metalman as I also haven't placed any of my foreign coins into a spreadsheet due to laziness.
Anyone willing to share a spreadsheet for world coins with me?

My collection increased by 1000 today so that brings it up to a little over 5500.
