Current Greek Eurocents: 2 Lepta and 5 Lepta (the 1 lepta has an old greek rowing vessel on it). The larger face value, the more recent and larger the ship...

Portuguese used to have a sailing tradition on their coinage too. If it weren't famous navigators or stylized naval elements, ships used to be all over: 2.50 and 5 Escudos: and 50 Escudos: the three compared in size:

Sorry, davidrj. That's a 15th century bronze ceitil, with a three-towered castle by the sea. Cool, though!

Thanks Philadelphian, I'd interpreted it as one of those mediaeval ships with turrets. Can't remember where this came from, must have been a bulk lot.

1920 Pilgrim half. My favorite ship coin, although the rigging is historically inaccurate. Reluctantly removed from 2x2 after 40 years, ready to post to "how far back can we go" thread in another 36 hours. Same Portuguese ship as earlier post, different year. I'm surprised I don't have any Thai coins showing the royal barges. Are there any, thai_vic?
