Yeah, the Coin World article doesn't say anything definitive at all, just lots of maybe this, maybe that, maybe nada. Just on a hunch I checked the U.S. Mint's product schedule but it too just shows the normal stuff. We have a lot of top-grade Kennedy halves so are keenly interested in what may develop here. Best Regards, George VDB Coins

Something is telling me that the mint will do nothing special for the Kennedy half this year. Something as big as the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half would have produced some information from the mint by this point, I would think. Are there any examples of sneak attacks by the mint before? Have they ever surprised everyone with an issue that received no preview or build up?

The 2006 20th anniversary sets for the eagles weren't announced until about a month before they went on sale if I remember correctly, and they didn't pop up until late in the year. Announced Aug 15th 2006, with a sale date of Aug 30th. Sofar I don't find an earlier announcement for that set. It may be there but I haven't found it yet. (Coin news and the US mint blog which usually have early notices weren't around back then.)

For what its worth, the coin hawkers on TV say their "sources at the Mint" have told them that the Mint will have a special edition coin or coin set for the 50th anniversary. And the Mint is keeping id keeping the details and release information under wraps for the moment. I too have scoured the Mint's Product Schedule for anything special on the Kennedy half dollar, other than the standard rolls and bags there isn't any official news.

I think this is exactly what the mint is looking for. Collectors to talk up the possibilities without ever saying a word. They need not do any kind of advertising as we are doing it ourselves. Then come out one day in March or so and Whamo! instant sell out.
Or they could just be being idiots and not doing anything. LOL

A JFK with Ike REV of the eagle on the moon (very fitting) - and in RP... I can dream. But I would like a normal REV RP in the set also. The third could be like the Canadian mint dies and plate selected areas gold or copper - tastefully (let's not do the gem-or-glass-bug-glued-on-coin thing though).

Actually the mint did a release this past year that they only hinted at doing. The Teddy Roosevelt Coin and Chronicles set was not advertised or posted on the mint site until it was set to be released.
There have been several different indications by the mint that a Kennedy set will be released this year. Multiple surveys requesting input from collectors. Many other websites posting comments from the mint spokes people suggesting what might be in the offing.

I'd like to see them bring back Ben Franklin half dollars since he didn't get his full 25 years on the coin. I think we short-changed him (pun intended).

I believe coin designs need congressional approval, which can explain a delay. There seems to be a preoccupation with more pressing issues for them to resolve.

Quote: I believe coin designs need congressional approval, which can explain a delay. Conder101 said on the previous page... Quote: Actually it doesn't REQUIRE legislation because the coin has been in production for over 25 years. The Sec of the Treasury could order a redesign on his own authority under the coinage act of 1890. I just don't see him having the nerve to do so. Legally the Secretary of Treasury has the power to order a new design, but his inaction creates a de facto legislative requirement.

Mint News Blog just updated the annual report for 2013 and it included a bit of news about the Kennedy set. According to the site the mint has indicated they plan on a couple of different offerings to acknowledge the 50th anniversary, but no specifics beyond that information.

Here is the direct quote from the Deputy Director's Letter in the Annual Report from the Mint Quote:New products on tap for FY 2014 include our Theodore Roosevelt special set and some new offerings recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar coin, in addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Programs. - Richard A. Peterson, Deputy Director - Not exactly fact filled, but at least an official confirmation that they do plan on doing "something"
