Thank you Dave!
I'm normally not far off on my grading of most other coins. It's the gold that gives me a terrible issue. I sat down with a young guy (early 20's, close to my age then) a few years ago at CONA. He was a grader from ICG. They had multiple slabs of $20 Double Eagles with numbers. You graded them, then they sat down and explained why it was a 60 vs 63. XF vs VF. Etc. Really informative but I FORGOT what he taught me!

burks, Pure guesswork on my part. Look at the two pictures: The circled areas appear ever so slightly worn. This is what puts the coin in an AU range. Often the cheek and the feathers in the eagle are the places to look, both for silver and gold coins. Folks, do you agree?

Ages ago, a dealer told me: "Silver wears away. Gold wears down." In my example, the gold appears to be a tad flatter, worn down. When in doubt I remember his advice.

I'll go AU-55 as well. Nice coin. With a kid in college and another in 3 years, I don't foresee me ever having a beauty like this one. Awesome.

Thanks for all of your comments! NGC GRADED AU-53 I had to make some sacrifices for this coin, selling some other valuable coins.....but this is exactly the type of coin I have been wanting for years. I don't mind discussing the price. I paid $7,550 for her with free shipping. I also got $100 in ebay bucks, so technically $7450 out of pocket. In my opinion, gold with this much detail should be graded more on the remaining luster than on the actual detail.....as the detail on this coin could easily be equivalent to an MS grade. It is clear that there is a lot of luster remaining in the protected areas, but is also clear that there is friction based off of the areas with missing luster....like directly in front of Liberty's face and above the eagle's head. Also, I doubt the high points on the devices have any remaining luster. This is what I believe accounts for the lower AU grade. An AU-58 should have a bit more field luster, though this coin looks like it could easily be a 55. I will know more once I get it in hand, which should be tommorow.

53? Wow. CAC would throw a Bean at that so hard it'd probably miss the slab. I could see it getting Gold at AU53.

I just took a look at a couple AU-53s that sold at some of the major online auction sites. Yours is FAR superior to those. From a novice gold collector to a more experienced one, well done sir!

Well done indeed Johnny ... lovely coin.
Kudos as well to SsuperDdave for his excellent description of how to evaluate a coin grade by photo ... the absolute best I have ever read.
