Die cracks on Morgans are usually not enough to warrant designation as a VAM. It's quite possible to build an entire date/mint set (excepting the rarities, of course, unless you mortgage the house ) with coins that have die cracks. Morgans were minted by the bazillions, and between the large mintage and large dies, cracks were very common.

The 1897-P isn't noted for significant VAM rarities. Look for doubling about the date to help attribute. Two fairly worthy VAM's exist - 6A, featuring pitting below the arrowheads on the reverse, and 8, featuring left-side star doubling and doubling at the top of the cap.

Hello Bottleguy,
While some actually think die cracks take away from the eye appeal and value of a coin, there are others like myself who find them interesting and desirable. In the Flying Eagle and Indian Head cent series, die cracks are used to determine the different die stages of a coin which can help attribute which variety you have. I personally try to collect the different die crack progressions in a particular date coin, it makes it a little more interesting for me.

Nice coin you have there,

Later,

Just search a junk box of Morgans from your local B&M dealer and just look for things that don't look right. THe O/S errors are an easy one to find.
