1996-D Nickel Thin Planchet 3.8 Grams

It weighs 3.8 grams, is the correct diameter but it thin, very thin, about the thickness of a dime. Any Ideas? I put another nickel next to it for comparison. If I were you I would get it certefied by PCGS if it turns out to be real.Wait for some more experienced members who will tell if it is real. Report this Post to the Staff

Can you get any close up Pictures of the letters as they meet the edge of the coin? Perhaps it was struck on a planchet intended for use on a non U.S. coin. Report this Post to the Staff

garylcsr Pillar of the Community United States 1952 Posts	Posted 08/18/2007 01:30 am I would hold on to it just in case it is a wrong planchet coin but I think it is post mint damage but how it was done I am not sure that I can figure it out. the elongated think makes sense but then again it don't. an elongated coin loses most if not all of the fields (bust and IGWT) this coin has it all. I think I have seen them where they smash it between two thick piece's of leather and got that affect and also kept most of the fields. OK now I am second guessing myself where are you at Chuck? Bill you probably have seen this also but don't Liston to me I think I may have already ruined this argument. i think I should just say good luck to you VarietyBuffalos and just read on till I figure it out myself.
