There is a history of Canadian backpackers traveling around the world, with the flag sewn onto the backpack to distinguish their country of origin. Wearing the Canadian flag with pride has been a backpacking thing.
Nice proof silver dollar.

Looks good Northerncoins, glad the colour version was to your liking. The quality looks as electrum had noted at the Mint unveiling event, better in hand. Good to see it worked out, like the leather. Quality coins deserve a quality case. I am glad in this case to say that it doesn't resemble the 20 for 20 pad print but is more vibrant from the picture. Here is a shot of the proof I just received and note that the backpack has a flag sewn on.

Really good Silver Dollar, congrats guys.
My taste with the Proof non-colorized, but the set is also great, expensive though.
I still wait till the end of the year to see all the SDs minted in 2015 and select "the one".

Thanks for the images CC-Ottawa, Northerncoins and SilverDon! My three SDs arrived yesterday - Proof, BU and Proof Set versions. I think the colourized SD is fairly well done. At "arm's length" the colours seem nicely even. Under close inspection (i.e., with a 5x coin glass) the pixelation used to achieve the shadow details is very evident. It's too bad the RCM can not yet print with more true colors vs. having to "fake" certain shades by the mixing of individual colour dots that are large enough to be easily seen. I do hope that future proof sets with the SD go back to the selective gold plating vs. colourization - I'm just not a big fan of painted coins. I guess I'm too much of a traditionalist! The proof version looks great, as usual, and the BU version shows the typical highly reflective surfaces that make it difficult to easily see all of the coin's details. You have to hold the BU coin "just right" to get its full effect. That's not a complaint, just an observation that reflects all of the RCM's BU SDs - they are very "shiny!" In summary, the RCM did a nice job with the first SD for 2015. I like the coin's design symbolism and its technical execution. They're keepers!

I do not know if someone noticed, that: 2015 Canada-related coins have some similarity in the design: **Silver Dollar **Canoe series **1oz Silver MacDonald coin **and now forthcoming nickel tribute (i thought, why suddenly to do it?) All of them have "crown of maple leaves" on the reverse. Yesterday, I received the MacDonald circulation Toonies pack, and it comes in designed envelop, not blank one as previous packs: so then only, after seeing "150" on the envelope, I realized that all above coins issued as part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 2017 program. Need to assume, that this design element will be kept for the coming next years, and this is the reason, that decided to tribute Canadian coinage bearing maple leaves... and who know, might be the Nickel has been choose as part of "Farewell to 5c" program.

@Silveroid: The Government of Canada has published a list of important national milestones that are to be subject to official commemoration as the nation continues its "Road to 2017" celebration in preparation of its sesquicentennial. If you look at the events noted through 2015, you'll notice that the RCM has issued coins for 9 of the 11 "official" anniversary events. Coin collectors should expect one or more coins for the majority of the remaining events as well. 2012- Bicentennial of the start of the War of 1812 - The Queen's Diamond Jubilee - Bicentennial of the Red River Settlement 2013- Centennial of the start of the Canadian Arctic Expedition - 20th anniversary of the Medak Pocket Battle 2014- Bicentennial of Sir George-Étienne Cartier's birth - 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Québec Conferences - Centennial of the start of the First World War - 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War 2015- Bicentennial of Sir John A. Macdonald's birth - 50th Anniversary of the National Flag of Canada 2016- 175th anniversary of the Election of Baldwin and Lafontaine / Leaders for Responsible Government - 175th anniversary of Sir Wilfrid Laurier's birth - 150th anniversary of the Fenian Raids - Centennial of women's suffrage - Centennial of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel (First World War) - 75th anniversary of the Battle of Hong Kong 2017- 150th anniversary of Confederation - Centennial of the Battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele - 125th Anniversary of the Stanley Cup and the Centennial of the National Hockey League (NHL) - 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid - 50th anniversary of the Canada Games You can read more about the events here: Français: http://canada150.gc.ca/fra/13596620...359989806481English: http://canada150.gc.ca/eng/13596620...359989806481

Thank you , commems. This explains the "150"
I put more accent on the similar element of design, which appears in these coins and other. Take for example the "Canoe" series - not really commemorative, but also have "the leaves", cause still relates to Canada and covered by "150 celebration". For Feb release - why exactly and suddenly was chosen to tribute any coin? My guess - the leaves design.

I'd love for the RCM to make an engraved, ultra-high relief Stanley Cup coin sometime, that would be amazing

Quote:Sir John A. Macdonald's 5-toonie pack is awaiting stock at RCM. Have to be really low mintage or first in series, to reach "Awaiting stock". Or we are not aware of something, and people buying them in quantities?

Dont be fooled , its just their marketing ploy, they seem to like only keeping a very limited amount of stock (or make it appear that way) on new releases and then once its "awaiting stock" everyone gets excited , but don't fall for it , Most seasoned collectors can see through that scam now lol.

Yeah, before it meant something (basically a precursor to being tagged a sell-out). If it occurred fairly quickly it would be the signal to the flippers to scour other sources of the coins because they were about to become hot. Now its a desperate attempt to drive excitement. Even low mintages aren't what they used to be. For collectors, they are now actually able to buy anything they want at issue. But, in the process the RCM is killing NCLT. What was the last thing to sell-out before getting out of MC? (Superman II?) "20 PERCENT REDUCTION IN MINTAGE!" - How about a 20% increase in MS state for the uncirculated set?
