Absolutely no edge lettering. Is this relatively common for 1809? Is this as rare as I think it is? I stumbled onto it on ebay and thought the deal was too good to be true. I got it for $322.

Yes they are rare. You might want to have that one reholdered into an edge view so the plain edge can be seen.

The numbers on the holder match the date and grade for this coin at PCGS but plain edge isn't noted. Is this normal?

I had thought - correct me if I'm wrong - that the plain edge was one of the experimental edge varieties they tried in 1809. So scarce, but not vanishingly rare like the rest of the series.
