Went back to the park that I had so many finds at and hit the last spot that I had'nt searched yet. One month of looking and I have found $41.51. One silver necklace and one silver dime. This was a new park that I went to. The play areas and picnic areas were picked clean. I could see the holes that were dug. Actually covered some of them up. In the middle of all this was a field. Having no luck I tried the field. Guess they didn't look there. Found a nice little bit. This morning I hit an elementary school. First time there. Found my first silver dime. Not a bad haul.

Thanks Jim. At this rate I just might have to. Dustin I put off buying one for about 2 years. Finally broke down and got one. Never thought I would enjoy it as much as I have. Richard I use a Whites Prizm 3. Didn't know how much I would like it so I went in the middle. Now kinda wish I went a little higher model. No tone id and can't skip over discrimination levels. But I am very happy with it.

We have a couple metal detectors and I've only used them a few times. The last time we went we found a penny and a nickel but I know the area had been searched. Can you give me any tips on what kind of areas I can go to and what to look for when doing this? Also what laws do I need to watch for (I don't want to do it illegally)?

wow very nice finds Mike. more quarters, dimes and nickels than pennies in that last take. thats awesome. my finds are usually more scrap metal than pennies I'm looking into upgrading my detector tho.. an old tessorro conqustador is what I'm using now. id like to try the ace 250 cause I hear alot of good things about it. I havnt done alot of detecting so I cant tell the difference between tones and all that and the ace looks pretty user freindly for a newbie detectorist like myself.

I use an Ace 250 and love it. It takes some getting used to though, Pull tabs and Nickels register the same on the dial but have a different tone.

I use a Whites DFX. Descrimination is very good. I tend to do research on 'older' sites if I can & then field walk before I get the detector out. For modern day stuff I hit the beaches & parks. Construction sites are always a good area to detect due to the earth removal.

Arthrene parks and schools are where I have been looking. I know here I had to get a permit from the Parks and Recreation dept. to look in the parks. Didn't cost anything and all they did was type a letter saying I had permission to look. Just have to keep it with me. The schools I hit one the weekends when there is no school.
Yes Crash that was an awful lot of silver at least for me. I was like a kid in a candy store. Love to find more like it.
Richard how may different tones does yours have. I am limited to one. On mine the pull tabs read either nickel or pull tab. A nickel will only read as a nickel. I dig up alot of pull tabs.
Casey I have a buddy that has a dfx. Very nice machine from what I have seen. Would love to have one. I think it has more dust on it than dirt. Never gets used. What a shame.

I don't know how many tones my detector will produce Iron gives a lower bass tone and the scale goes up to a shrill ding for silver Pull tabs have a slightly lower tone than a nickel. Nickels produce a sharper more pronounced bell like tone.

It was an expensive machine when I bought it a couple of years ago Southern Yankee...approx $1700. I had an XLT before that ( whites ) & that was another good model. I don't get so much time to dig now as I used to do...plus I've moved away from the English Midlands up to North Wales. Where I used to live I was right on a Roman settlement. Here where I am now the area is more rural, less population...I gotta travel a bit more for those older finds. Plenty of beaches though...when work & the wife allows!

My upgrade will definately have tone ID. Will have to save alittle to get an upgrade. The nicer ones get alittle pricey. Where I live its almost at least a 30 min. to anywhere. I have nothing but time on my hands so the drive doesn't bother me too much.
