I bought a lot of silver halves at an auction for $200, sold 28 of them for a profit and kept this one. I am pretty sure it has been cleaned but wonder if it makes VG

And nothing about it screams 'cleaned' to me. I have seen this coloring before.
What is your reason?
A nice example to keep, and that it is a 1914 Half is icing on the cake.

Close to VG10 and I don't think it looks cleaned.

Nice job

In hand it has a slight shine like it has been lightly polished

Yours is the last of THOUSANDS of hands whose touch has caused the highest devices to shine.
I look at the protected areas. I WANT them to be darker.
Unless the shine can be detected between the letters and these dark areas retoned I think that you are fine.

Compare to my NGC VG-10. They appear very similar.

It's VG-10 but the cleaning, if there actually any, seems market acceptable. I think it would grade.

Solid VG-8 in my book and surfaces look original. The only defects I see are a small rim bruise at 6:30 on the reverse and a tiny one at 1:30 on the obverse. They likely would not preclude a righteous grade.
Very nice key date Barber, at a net price of less than zero!

If it has been cleaned it's retoned nicely. I'll give it VG-8 all day.

Looks original to me and 8-10. The rim bump at 6:30 on the reverse is more distracting than the potential for a light old cleaning IMO. Nice coin. I like it.
