I bought this labeled: 1854 California Gold 1/2 Dollar OctogonalToken I bough it thinking this was what is put on page 369 of the 2008 Red Book. Though it is a tad smaller than half an inch about about an eight of an inch in thickness. I am like 100% sure this isn't what's listed in the Red Book but one can never give up hope. So my question is does anyone know what this really is? It's possible worth / value to know if I got jipped and a way to determine if it's gold that I have or just painted to look like gold without scratching at it. thank you very much for your information. p.s the reverse is rotated as much as the picture was taken.
I believe yours is just a reproduction of the real thing (and not a very well made one at that) and that is why they called it a token. I doubt it has any gold content at all but I am not 100% positive on this fact. I see these littered on ebay allot selling for very little money (not sure exactly how much because I have never watched an auction till the end)This is a real california fractional octagon gold coin http://cgi.ebay.com/1875-California...34_W0QQitemZ220154012330QQihZ012QQcategoryZ39473QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
