When I asked my local dealer, he believed the new die had been preserved in a lead coating, so the first few strikes appeared lead-colored on the surface. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 04/26/2015 1:32 pm Never heard of this before. The planchets are cut from roll stock and no lead is used in the mint. If there is lead on the coin, it was added during circulation. Some people put stuff on coins and that ruins collectable value. (even after market plating/reprocessing zinc) But image image would tell us more what is going on with your coin. Then we can go from there. Stuff happens to circulated coins and sometimes know how it is altered is hard to determine. But we can try with a great image of your coin to see what is going on with it. A good image of the full obverse, reverse and a shot on the reverse rim area, close up might tell us what you have. Report this Post to the Staff
