What I'm going to do next is show a part of an image of an Early Commemorative coin and folks will have to figure out which one it is.

Even I had trouble with this one.

Hi yotie. When I finish the quiz, I'll start on that one. Much more difficult.

Which commemorative has a fleur-de-lis on its reverse?

A. Roanoke Island
B. Elgin
C. Albany
D. New Rochelle

The Correct answer is "D", New Rochelle.

"True, but if you consider that there are two varieties of the 1935 Boone -- one with a small "1934" on the reverse and one without it -- "8" would also be a correct answer!"

I noticed that also but wanted to stick with the reference answer. I should have mentioned the Boone "small 34."

Anthony de Francisci, the designer of the Peace silver dollar, also designed what commemorative.

A. Illinois

B. Panama-Pacific

C. Maine

D. Pilgrim

The 1920 Maine Centennial Half Dollar is a design currently attributed to Anthony de Francisci.

Many were used in everyday commerce ... resulting in the present day collecting possibility for an honestly circulated example.

Lovely MS examples also exist in the market ... and are available with enough appearances such that any interested collector can acquire such an example.

Maine is the correct answer.

Roger Burdette discovered that Harry H. Cochrane did the sketches for the coin. He wrote a nice article about it. You should be able to find it on the web:

by Roger W. Burdette, Copyright 2002, 2005.

Which commemorative displays on its reverse the likenesses of Peter Schuyler, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Dongan?

A. Elgin

B. Rhode Island

C. Albany

D. None

The correct answer is the 1936 Albany (NY) Charter Anniversary Half dollar.

Another 'story' behind this coin is the live beaver reported to have lived in Gertrude Lathrop studio ...

yotie. That's not cheating, that's you taking the initiative to get the correct answer.

I applaud that.

The Albany (NY) half dollar is also the answer to a fun numismatic trivia question ...

Which United States coins contains the smallest statutory required legend LIBERTY?

Observe the reverse of the coin and look below the letters CH of CHARTERED ... note the teeny, tiny legend LIBERTY.

I'll leave the answer pending for a while ... hopeful that our newer fans do their research and provide the response.

Thanks for the quiz LeeG.

Antietam.

I had to look it up to be certain, but it was my guess based on what I thought I remembered.
