Although I don't really know how to grade, I can say for sure that it is a beautiful coin, and I'm curious as to the grade it was given.

Quote: The suspense man! Awesome pics by the way. Thank you SilverStackerKid! I keep going back to photograde on this one. Mainly because I don't normally grade gold... I'm still thinking this coin is not labeled right. http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/20Lib/Grades

I will also have to concede. I said MS63. I think I can also see some rubbing on the highest points, and AU58 has to be nearer the mark. That is a pity, because in most other ways it is a very attractive coin.

Wow... I was holding off on giving an opinion until you took better pics.... And man you succeeded there, great photos!
This ones tough.... It appears to have the slightest amount of wear on the high points, but otherwise it's very clean.. I'm going to have to say AU-58, though a MS grade wouldn't surprise me either. If this old girl saw circulation is was very brief.... It seems to me that this is a great example of where a AU-58 looks far nicer than a low MS grade... (If a 58) I'd rather this coin than many many 60's-62's! Wow... Ya, if it wasn't for what appears to be that slight rub I'd say easily a 64, for such a large, soft coin it's surprisingly clean.
But regardless of grade she sure is a beauty!

She's currently graded at MS 63 in a SEGS holder. Help me decide if I should leave well enough alone and put this beauty up or is it worth the gamble to submit to PCGS? Don't worry about hurting my feelings... I'm a big boy. Thanks guys!

AU-58 is my grade. My dad had an MS-64 RD 1909 S VDB graded by SEGS. He sold it for a profit to someone who agreed with the grade (and even got Bill Fivaz's consensus). When the buyer got the coin back from PCGS, they gave it an AU-58. So it is possible SEGS overgraded it.

I think it would cross over at 63 to PCGS, which is good if you bought it in a SEGS holder, should increase the market value greatly, the chance of it upgrading to 64 is there but still quite slim. Nonetheless, you should have it put in a PCGS holder.

I would not submit it to PCGS unless I had money to burn. This is a better date and probably an AU coin. I say that because of the subdued luster that appears "rubbed" from the cheek and dim in the obverse field from 8:00 to 10:00. I could be wrong of course but considering this is a $4000-$5000 coin in 63? Well, it's likely an AU.
P.S. In 64 it's $10,000+ so we know it's not undergraded by a one-man grading company.

I don't know anything about the prices that SEGS commands, but would it really lower the selling price to have it in a PCGS AU-58 holder instead of a SEGS MS-63? I think that is a relevant question in this case.

If you are willing to gamble the grading fee I'd think getting it to cross to PCGS 63 would be a big win. You never know how PCGS will jump and it could work in your favor. I think you can specify a minimum crossover grade of MS-63 so you only risk the grading fee plus shipping. Do you feel lucky? Well, do you?

Quote: Unfortunately PCGS will not cross SEGS coins. I don't see any prohibition against SEGS on the PCGS website. Under "Crossover" guidelines they just say their Crossover service is: "For a coin previously graded (currently encapsulated) by another grading service."They also state you can specify a minimum crossover grade, which cannot be any higher than the grade shown on the current holder. I've sent in SEGS-holdered coins in the past and PCGS crossed them, albeit at a grade one notch lower than what SEGS had graded them. If they now exclude SEGS that reflects a policy change that apparently has not been reported on their website. A quick phone call to PCGS customer service could resolve the question....

I'm considering doing a crossover with ANACS first, after reading through the different post, comments, and suggestions. It would only be a small fee, and like it was stated previous, I can state a minimum grade.
If I do decide to proceed this direction, then I will keep everyone posted.
