I am a bit suspicious that a $50,000 coin should be found on ebay, unless it is being offered by a seller with only the best of already well recognised reputations. Genuine cent planchets at that price level are easy enough to find. Top quality fake dies, hubbed from a genuine coin can also be fabricated by a machinist professional, who knows what he is doing. This piece needs to be authenticated, before any attempt is made to sell it.

If you've got 5-6 figures laying on your desk that you don't know what to do with, that seller is where you want to be. As far as dream coins though, planchet "errors" just don't do it for me.

My dream coin is a 1849 double eagle. Or maybe a 1794 silver dollar with a silver plug.

If it is to be my 'dream coins' in the area of U.S. classic coins, they would have to be the twin gold Panama Pacific Exposition $50 octagonal and round coins. I have had a pair of those sitting in the palm of my hand. 4 ounces of gold], in a pair of rare coins! Actually, my dream coins lie in the area of ancient numismatics.

I wonder about that Indian cent / gold error. I guess the metrology and gold content matches up ... still I wonder if items like this of an off-metal planchet character is always of a 100% certainty being of another U.S. denomination? John Lorenzo Numismatist United States

Why would someone like Mike Byers sell his collection on ebay? The fees have to be ridiculous.

I like the way ebay functions as a free museum. At this price the coin will be on display for quite a while. I like the way it silvered up. But my dream coin is a $10 Oregon beaver.

Right now I just want a 1916 LSQ with a good date for less than $2500. I could then justify spending the money to fill the last four holes in my set. If I can never fill all the holes in my set I just cannot justify to myself spending a couple more thousand on the expensive but less rare coins in the set.
