Neat.

I don't have any reference books that cover this location and time period. Would you (or anyone else) know if all of the coins of Sigismund Augustus have that design, or were there separate coinages for the two halves of the country?

I only ask because I have a groschen of the previous ruler (Sigismund I) that has a distinctly Polish/Prussian look, with the king's portrait and Polonian Eagle, with text GROSS COMU TERR PRVSS (which I translate to "trade groschen of the land of Prussia").

Whereas your coin has a distinctly Lithuanian look, with the Polonian eagle on one side and the Lithuanian Vytis on the other, with text MONETA MAGNI DVCAT LITV ("coin of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania"). I assume the square thing between MAGNI and DVCAT is the mintmark.

Sorry, I dont know too much as I'm knew to medieval coinage also. Ive also only looked at half-groschens. So far all 1/2groschens of Sigimund II Ive seen have the Vytis(knight) on one side and eagle on the other. I have seen Sigimund I's with a crown and Eagle, I assume these were minted in Poland. But like I said I dont know a lot so take it for what you will. Thank you for your post.

"Sorry, I dont know too much as I'm knew to medieval coinage also."

A coin from 1565 is not medieval, though.

There are many different dates given for the end of the Middle Ages, such as:
1453- the Fall of Constantinople and the end of the Hundred Years War
1492- The Spanish Reconquista was completed
1517- Martin Luther and the Reformation

So as strange as it may sound, a coin from 1565 is actually modern!
