There are other advantages to nickels over pennies. They are harder and produce more cracks chips Cuds etc. They are harder than pennies and more durable over the years. They are larger and easier to search. I search so many I don't give the machines a percentage. The banks gives me wrappers. I put fewer nickels in each roll than pennies. I also get four times as much cash from each roll. The design on nickels is more searcher friendly. If it wasn't for Jefferson's contributions, Lincoln probably wouldn't have a country to be president for, and if he did there would be no USA west of the Mississippi. As long as we're searching the Monticello is rounded and prettier to look at than the Memorial, btw another contribution from Jefferson. It takes less time to search a nickel than a penny. If you drop one, it's easier to find. Nickels are easier to photograph, and to find in your pocket. I'd even rather have nickel spendables than pennies. On the flip side of the coin, there are just as many reasons to search pennies rather than nickels. I like them both.

The Bar is the chip over the date. The Henning is the counterfeit. The Hobo was altered into skeletons and such.

Seal - our fellow enthusiasts covered it well. I also look for clashes and high grade 82/83 PD specimens. Also 88 and 92 if it suits me. With cents you can pull modern DDRs until your fingers fall off. Much busier than finding keepers in nickels. I probably keep 10-15 nickels a box. A couple lower mintage dates/mms, 6 or so high grades and 5 or so error/variety nickels. DD coins in business strikes are harder to find especially worn. The 1939 DDR is an exception but I'm still looking. But the War Nickels have a ton of rpms, the 50s a few rpm/omm and a number of 60s DDRs. Much easier to detect when in high grades. And as you note the 70s forward are light. But finding high grade 70s and early 80s is a treat and tough to come by. Sorry I noticed this late. Feel free to PM me if you like.

For the Bar Nickel - I only see it for the 1960D over the 0 - are there others years/areas affected with this same issue?

Thanks for the invite Ocala, with 2 kids my weekends are pretty full. But I may be able to get there on Saturday. That would be a great experience, especially for a newbie like me.

Sandy - lots of Bar dates. Most I see are 1960 and 1962 though. I suppose those dies were worked pretty hard!

Thanks Rackster, this post is great and I am learning a ton about nickels now. Most of what I research is on the Lincolns and with these new nickel discoveries (for me) I find my self a little rejuvenated. I have been doing more research and less posting lately. I am trying to learn what the DDO look is and the coin making process.

That's good to hear Sandy! There is no substitute for knowledge, but coupled with experience, great things can happen. I notice that the folks who invest in the learning side ramp up the quickest. Ocala hit it hard and now he's sitting on a pile of variety coins. You can too!
For nickels, Brian's Variety was a great resource to associate type of doubling with pictures for me. Knowing the differences in look will help you sift through the nickels faster and increase the odds of finding something cool...and maybe even valuable. So good luck on the learning...and don't stop 'til you drop!

The bar over the zero is best, but still qualifies as a Bar Nickel over any digit in the date.
