what kind of camera is the best for taking pictures for say ebay or posting on here I see so many nice pictures of coins on ebay but don't know what camra I should use? Edited by eric ramsdell

iPhone 4s has a camera that seems to produce really decent results when it comes to coins. since you can pick them up for around $40 it's a cheap way to accomplish your goal.
lighting is probably just as, if not more than, as important than your camera.
check out the photography section here, lots of good advice.

A lot will depend on how much you want to spend and what level
of pictures will make you happy.
There are a couple of threads in the coin photography sections
that might give you some ideas.

I think it is about 80% technique and 20% equipment. If you have a current camera, spend some time as others suggested on technique and see what results you can get.

I suppose a DSLR with macro lens, etc, would be the best. However, I've seen many great pics from cellphones. In some cases, coin pictures from those are better than what I can take with a DSLR.

(Any suitable camera on sale, leaving more money for coins.)

Eric...look at the <$400 and <$350 threads for how to put together a relatively inexpensive coin photography setup. Several folks have gone down that path and can help you get the most from the equipment...Ray

If you are selling lots of cheap coins, then a cell phone camera is all you need (or even a flat bed scanner). As a general rule: the buyers will find the coins are better than the photos. If you are selling high value coins then an interchangeable lens Camera (DSLR or mirrorless) with an APSc sensor will produce pictures ideal for ebay. I would say as a universal principle the best camera is the one you know how to use. Elaborating: you can have the best gear in the world but if you don't know how to use it you will find the pictures you produce will be beat by someone with a 15 year old point and shoot. |
