I know this won't qualify as an official DMPL or PL coin because the mirrors (roughly eight inches) and proof-like appearance only apply to the obverse. The reverse still has plenty of luster, though. Regardless, I imagine it would command a slight premium to a typical MS coin, and I'm curious what it might grade. Thanks.

It appears to have enough depth of field to warrant a PL designation, although I think you are correct that the reverse is not quite DMPL.

That being said, ANACS, for instance, slabbed coins with the DMPL OBV or DMPL REV designation to indicate that a coin might be such as yours, a DMPL / PL split.

The obverse field contrast is very cameo, and the cheek and fields are very well preserved. I think that MS 65 PL would be the grade, or MS 65 PL (DMPL OBV) if you prefer.

Thanks, guys. Adam, I didn't realize ANACS did this. Do they still do obverse/reverse designations if the entire coin isn't DMPL/PL? Also, not to get off subject, but is ANACS respectable when it comes to grading? I know they have a longer history than the other grading companies, but my local coin guy was talking a little trash about them the other day. I'm not sure how serious he was. I think he just meant that PCGS and NGC coins carry more weight...with PCGS obviously being the leader in the field.

Mont, those mirrors can be tricky when trying to photograph, so I appreciate the comment. With your help and the help of others, I keep trying to improve my skills.
Rest in Peace

MS65 possibly PL depending on the reverse fields.

MS-65 with DMPL obverse. Certainly worth a premium to a coin with no PL surfaces.

ANACS is one of the leaders in Morgan dollars, especially when it comes to recognizing VAMs (die varieties.) There was a period of time where their grading became a bit questionable, but as of late, they seem to be swinging back to a more conservative approach. I do not know if they still recognize DMPL OBV/REV designations.

Thanks. I'm considering sending some of my Morgans to ANACS. I appreciate the comments and information.

I'm at MS-65. Obverse looks DMPL, but I'm on the fence on the rev being PL, although I'm leaning towards no.

Nice. 64 maybe squeak out a 65. The obv sure looks dmpl but the reverse is holding it back to only PL. Nice coin!

Check the second 8 for spikes coming out the top, a checkmark looking mark inside the left of the upper loop or patches of what looks like die chips inside the loops

Thanks, Cascade. I haven't noticed any of those VAMs.
