I know we've discussed these before, but how does this counterstamped coin obtain a straight MS68 grade?

To me the application of the large counterstamp automatically makes this a Details coin, regardless of how tasteful or even valuable the counterstamp may be.

BTW - any interest jbuck? It's currently priced at 1 Ike.

nickelsearcher, I agree. This is yet another example of TPG inconsistency. If a coin has marks applied outside of the mint it deserves a details grade.
There were quite a few discussions about such coins back when the privy-marked American Silver Eagles were released. I remember that a certain TV coin huckster began peddling ASEs marked with his flavor of counterstamp. He called it a privy and convinced one of the TPGs to assign them MS-70 grades in special slabs.
TPGs are only in it for the money.

I would not call is MS68 because it is not mint state.

I would not call it Details because that would be insulting to counter stamp collectors.

I believe they should have left the label ungraded like they do for other specialty items.

Either way, I am tempted to bid.

Thank you for sharing the like, NS.

I agree with you, nickelsearcher. It shouldn't straight grade with that counterstamp.

You can see the indent on the obverse side created by the strike to the reverse. Personally part of it is who is grading the coin.

Meh. Modern counterstamps just don't appeal to me. Even if they are of this type. I can't help but see them as PMD.
