NOT that using coins in other countries is foolish! But I certainly am glad the US does NOT parrot the world - especially with things like our Second Amendment and other freedoms! The reality is that there is no club to join. Canada obviously has stopped making their penny, and Scandinavian countries sometimes don't have any coin worth less than our dime. Switzerland doesn't make a coin worth less than a nickel. But the major currencies, the Euro, the Japanese Yen, and the British pound all make a tiny denomination coin worth roughly US 1 cent. What is relatively unique is that the USA mints such a large quantity of pennies (even on a per capita basis). The Lincoln Penny was produced in total quantity under 200 billion from 1909 to 1982, but over 300 billion of the zinc pennies have been made from 1983 to the present. The production numbers far exceed that of other countries with similar small coins. Report this Post to the Staff

Many kids start coin collecting by buying Lincoln Penny folders and have fun filling them up. Without the penny in our midst, many potential future collectors would not be born.
