I find it amusing to see the RCM advertising this whale "coin" as its first "true 3-D coin." It would appear the RCM marketing team does not understand what "3-D" means. Every coin the Mint has ever issued has been a true 3-D coin - all can have their length, width and height dimensions measured. Attaching a piece of metal to an object that is already three-dimensional does not make it "true 3-D" (or even more 3-D). Attaching a second tail to a dog doesn't suddenly make the animal a "true dog"! It's just another example of RCM hype flying in the face of the facts at hand.

I think "The Wale" glued same way to the coin as "Glass Creatures" and they also were 3 dimensional. I've read more deeply. They claim that the "Wale" is first Mint 3-D coin. Marketing people thinking, that previously Mint issued 2-D coins? Which brilliant mind created this description and another one approved?

In 10-20 years, hopefully these shenanigans have disappeared and the hobby flourishes. I'm still selling my collection since that's not a safe bet.

For some reason, RCM appears to be obsessed with FIRSTs. First release, first of a technology, first of this or that. As if the consumer will be believing that First is Always the best, the most successful. Maybe in about 1960 that was a strong marketing feature, but certainly not today.

Forget the "firsts", they can't even nail the last. Long time no see, Penny.

Maybe you might just cull down your existing collection and keep what holds personal meaning or satisfaction in some way? Numismatics is both an enjoyable hobby and learning journey that can last a lifetime, NCLT is only one part if it. It's when it crosses over into investment territory or chasing monthly hot and just as quickly drop releases with hopes of making money, I agree, eventually it's sure to be a let down. But it also can be an interesting educational venture into observing the pull of relatively hardcore advertising tactics. I know there's several circulation collectors here who started out on the NCLT side of things. It's an option I hope you might also consider:-)

Funny commems I had the same thought when I first read that first true 3-D line. Reminded me of what I overheard a couple of years ago at Canada Day fireworks. A parent behind me in the crowd actually told their kid to record the fireworks with his phone, 'so we can watch it in 3-D'. I almost fell over laughing. It was in Ottawa so maybe the guy works for the RCM marketing department.

Yes, soon to come, another FIRST, this time a series of really truly 3D coins.
Comes in a nice case along with absolutely free 3D glasses. Hurry and Buy.
Adding a thought... The marketing concept of the MC program is also framed around the word FIRST, the First to learn what's to be released each month, the First given an opportunity to Hurry and Buy.

That's right, it will be. There may even appear to be some specs and pits but only by using the free 3D glasses it will become evident what a truly remarkable and flawlessly perfect work of art it is.

The glasses have tiny printing on the lens that says "thanks for buying this 3D junk".

yes, if they hadn't jumped the shark before this, it's hard to argue that this "first true 3D coin" isn't the proof of the pudding. But just to be sure we get the message, it comes in-tow with a coin featuring wood chips! It's the neo wooden nickel, but it's a First!

Comments online elsewhere indicate that the RCM will soon be reaching new "heights" ("lows"?) in its quest for true 3-D coins. It seems an upcoming NCLT grizzly bear issue will basically be a small sculpture of a bear attached to a silver "coin." If these reports are accurate, it would appear the RCM is moving even further away from its traditional role as Canada's official supplier of coins, and increasingly becoming a manufacturer of "official" precious metal collectibles!
