Only getting around to reading the whole thread after a quick glance last week and learning about the post the other night.
Please forgive my ramble or if I'm reiterating what's already been said.
This was a hot topic of discussion at a coin club meeting on Wednesday with lots of varied comments.
Although this is not the first time I've heard about a counterfeit Canadian coin bearing the wrong obverse, it's absolutely absurd that a grading company would miss this glaring detail.
Quite some time ago (think it was here) that I saw a photo of a George VI post 1948 dollar with the et ind imp abbreviation.
The real meat and potatoes in my opinion is whether a grading company also considers themselves as an authentication service.
Considering the current climate I believe they have a moral obligation to do both. When submitting banknotes to BCCS for example I can be pretty confident that the grader has taken the time not only to confirm to the best of their ability that they are not only genuine but also original .
Quite often I've read about a well respected error collector offering to pay the grading costs on a pm altered coin if it comes back legit. Rarely has anyone (that I heard of) take him up on the offer.
If you are skilled enough to tell the difference between an MS64 and MS65 chances are you've probably looked at thousands of coins and therefore should be able to spot any red flags prompting further investigation before slabbing the piece.
These are dark days ahead indeed if you can't trust extremely knowledgeable people who have been in the business for many decades! Last I checked there are three sides to a coin, all of need to be evaluated before putting one's reputation on the line.
Description errors are forgivable and easily fixed or refunded at little or no cost to the customer.

CoinHunter: Have you considered submitting your "really good fakes" to Black Cabinet ( theblackcabinet.org)? A number of folks have brought up the good idea that the only good thing to come out of this is the educational value of the experience. Having them in the BC would certainly be a good thing, and would be a longer lasting benefit. I was happy to see this thread posted to the homepage on coinsandcanada.com, but in a few more weeks that may be gone and this thread will take its place in the archives. Keep it alive! While they claim to the a database of US counterfeits, they do make mention of world counters. I think it is time for them to include coins of Canada! [applause, applause]

It is the truly the beginning of the end of collecting coins. I don't know what techniques PCGS uses, but I certainly don't have the expertise to know an ICCS certified coin as being counterfeit. ICCS grades tons of Canadian coins, and for them to have certified who knows how many counterfeit coins leaves me speechless, as a collector and buyer.

The seller has 100% reproduction coins. I'm looking at the completed sales, and many coins were sold for crazy prices. So sad.

You've got to be a complete idiot to bid on a raw coin originating from a Chinese seller, no matter how good the coin looks. Upon very careful and magnified examination of the pictures of these completed items (that some went for extremely high amounts) there is evidence of the coins being fake. I must admit, the very first time I saw these coins for sale on ebay, I was intrigued and thought about bidding, but the fact that the seller was in China, stopped me dead in my bidding tracks. Also, there were a few of them that did look like fakes right away.

doubleeagle59: You might certainly be correct... but what if I was THAT idiot... and I bought the coin... then a few years later I decided to sell it on ebay... now you're looking at an uncertified coin from a canadian seller.... then what? Perhaps only buy certified coins.... well we now know ICCS has made a blunder and uncertain as to how many.... The big issue is that there are people making fakes... and to a larger degree ebay is allowing these to get to a world wide market really easily.... eventually these fakes will be discovered but not until they have burned a few in the process... that's the sad part.

Any one of those Canadian coins would have been certified by ICCS.
