Dillon Valued Member United States 240 Posts	Posted 03/29/2008 8:47 pm I was at work today, and the lady that I was working with today showed me a 1920 Wheat penny she had found in her drawer , in very good condition, it didnt have any wear on the obverse, and had only a little on the reverse. She said she was gonna "shine it up" when she got home , she looked at me weird when I said "NO DONT EVEN TOUCH THAT COIN WITH A DROP OF WATER!" and stood there and tried telling me that polishing a coin up WILL increase the value ... What should I tell her to convince that it is the worst thing to do to a coin... Any ideas? -Dillon Report this Post to the Staff

toniblab Valued Member United States 336 Posts	Posted 03/30/2008 5:15 pm tell her if she cleans the coin she is throwing her money away.she takes a 6.00 coin to a 2.00 coin.and that she scratches the coins surface.she might think it looks pretty, we see it as damage. ratio411 Pillar of the Community United States 1208 Posts	Posted 03/30/2008 5:29 pm Go to ebay and find a good pic of a slabbed coin with the red label and "CLEANED" listed on it. Save the pic to your PC. Now find the same coin, slabbed by the same company, in the same detail grade if possible... with the nice light colored label without the big, bold "CLEANED" on it... Save it to your PC. Now either combine the pics and print them off as one comparison, or email them to her. That will show that it does matter to value, and the big red label shows how ill we collectors treat cleaned coins. Either that, or email her a direct link to this thread!
