I remember seeing this going around back in 2014. I corrected the young lass that shared it back then. Now I see it has resurfaced. Given how little time I spend on Facebook (and the internet as a whole lately) it has probably always been around. Does anyone know who started it and when? If I was more computer savvy I would love to track how it spread through the internet. What my old folklore professor said about memes and internet culture is that you can trace it to a tee. It is a great tool for seeing how information is passed from one person to another. The five dollar coin does exist. It is a 2012 NCLT sterling silver and niobium coin. http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/sterl....WJ-UMjsrLIU

I see that very often, but I certainly am glad that we won't be having a 5 dollar coin anytime soon, I like collecting paper money as well.

I haven't seen it lately but did see it a few years ago. No idea how it started?

Here is one "source". A Vancouver radio station. http://www.cfox.com/2015/04/03/new-...-is-heading/Carmen Cruz irresponsibly posted it to their website in April 2015 and it has been share over 1300 times on Facebook. It's on and Twitter too. Social media urban legend. (edit to add: dunno why the name of another SM site is being erased when I try to post it but you get the idea, it's everywhere) It really is sad that people see a meme or some other piece of pure fiction and don't question it at all.

According to CCs link, was this perhaps originally an April Fools joke that was taken seriously?
Considering a huge percentage of the population never heard of non-circulating coinage or seen a $5 coin. I can understand how the "Canadian Mint joke" may have morphed into a false rumour. But a lot of stuff that floats around on Facebook has gotten to the point it isn't expected to be true.

Even better. "meanwhile in Canada" posted this on April 3/15. Note they seem to confirm that it's an April fools joke. I added the red arrow.

Just silly...I really don't think it makes sense to have a $5 coin anyways. I think $2 is a good cut-off point.

We have had a $5 circulation coin for over a hundred years. They were never very popular. They are current legal tender and were of little numismatic interest until recently.

Now that's a $5 coin!
I miss the days when our coins were made of real money.
