Just something to add, I am aware of the counterfeiters busted in Montreal a number of years ago but I believe they were making copies of the 1990 Loonie, I have not seen or heard of another 1987.

I have not heard of an '87 fake; The details all look corect to me - they are hard to replicate with the precision that the RCM does/did. Is it possible that this was a real loonie which was plated - that should account for the extra weight.

In hand you can see lots of missing details and the plating is starting to wear through on the queen revealing it's 'white' metal base.

I would love to put that one on the XRF... I have been slowly acquiring data on counterfeit $1 and $2, in cooperation with the RCMP. The intent is to eventually publish a peer-reviewed paper on these. I could test it, and then send it in to the RCMP Lab in Ottawa for you...
That said - it looks like a normal strike for an 1987 loon, and possibly gold-plated and soldered afterwards?

What is that at 1 o'clock on the obverse rim? Looks like a real loonie poking through the plating. The "casting" marks sure look like solder remnants as if this coin was once part of a jewelry item.

Well my confidence is slowly slipping away, maybe it is just an ex-jewelry piece or someone having fun. I do see the small spot that DBM points out, funny I overlooked that until I see it blown up in the picture. The 'white' metal I see showing through is what threw me off initially. I guess it could be nickel plated, and then gold plated again, or something similar. @ SPP - maybe I'll save the postage and just hand it to you at the next Expo since the authenticity is now in question.

Almost every cast counterfeit that has been made, was with various forms of 'white metal'... rarely are they iron or nickel (need a hotter smelter for those). Is your coin attracted to a magnet?

I'm going to jump on the "plated genuine coin used for jewelry" bandwagon here. Why would someone make a counterfeit loonie in the wrong "color"? I see some more normal color here:
